Talent Marketers — Leading with who you're not is actually saying who you are. It's just a much more compelling way of talking about your company.
Lean into this with confidence. It’s the easiest (and most authentic) way to stand out.
Side note: My hope (and vision) for the future of job search is that candidates will also be given the opportunity to lean into who they’re not as part of the application process.
Where they can create their own personal talent brands and be evaluated on humanness as well as skill.
And be part of a system that rewards their grit and ambition—the soft skills that matter more than most hard skills—instead of filtering them out using antiquated resumes and software that act as the gatekeeper to opportunity.
We say that we want more authenticity in our recruitment process. Apparently, only companies are allowed to practice it.
And we applaud these "bold" companies all day long while they continue to force candidates to hide behind pieces of paper and navigate systems built to give access to the few who already have it.
It's time we rethink this stuff.
